Senior Accountant – Audit & Assurance

Summary

Boyum Barenscheer is seeking an Audit & Assurance Senior Accountant to act as the liaison between the partner or manager, the client and the professional staff.  They are generally responsible for all phases of an engagement, and should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground and leading large, collaborative projects.  The Senior Accountant must have knowledge of the firm’s core values, and be conversant with its reports, its letters relating to matters of policy, and its opinions on financial matters.  They must develop expertise in the profession.

Considering the above general accountabilities in greater detail, below is a list of specific tasks that fall within the responsibility of this position:

  • Master the Staff Accountant responsibilities
  • Lead audits, reviews, compilations and agreed upon service engagements
  • Maintains contact with clients throughout the business year, which involves a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of the client’s business rather than mere routine attendance to immediate problems
  • Prepares the engagement letter and any subsequent modifications for approval by a partner, answers any questions the client may have so there is a complete understanding of the nature and terms of an assignment, including an estimate of fees, and sees that the engagement letter is signed by the client and returned before the start of the engagement
  • Prepare (or review if prepared by staff) internal controls and work programs prepared by the staff and if necessary, revise the work program then discuss the work program and time budget with the partner to obtain approval
  • Develops work plan first and follows the progress of the work during an engagement in relation to budgeted time and scheduled dates of completion, reviewing the working papers in the field as the job progresses. Determines whether all phases of the engagement are being carried out properly and in the best sequence. Anticipates the problem areas and questions that might arise
  • Knows the client’s impression of the conduct of the engagement
  • Keeps the partner or manager informed of all important developments in the work, analyzes the major problems that occur and recommends solutions
  • Prepares and/or reviews the financial report drafted by the staff as the engagement nears completion
  • Follows reports through processing, answering any questions that arise, submits the reports to the partner or manager for final approval and signature, and supervises the distribution according to the client’s instructions
  • Supervises the preparation of management letters and collaborates on tax matters
  • Completes staff performance evaluations after each engagement and discuss them with staff members and his/her leader
  • Assists in recruiting new staff, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional staff development programs
  • Should make associations and be willing to develop a network
  • Maintains knowledge of general economic and political trends, and, of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate
  • Prepares other reports and projects as requested from time to time by the partners and managers
  • Developing expertise in an area of specialty application

Qualifications and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in public accounting, demonstrates a progression in complexity, scope and number of engagements managed
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education is required each year
  • Active CPA certification preferred
  • Must be a member in good standing with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
  •  Proficiency in use of computers, computer accounting software, and tax software programs
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Must be available to seasonally work Saturdays.

  • Required to sit for long periods of time
  • Extensive computer use and use of keyboard and mouse
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
